What is a dermal filler?

Dermal Filler is a substance that can be injected into the face to improve its appearance. At around the age of 25, the body stops producing collagen and elastin, the two proteins that work together to keep tissue firm and skin elastic, and the existing collagen in the body begins to break down. Without these two proteins, the body begins to display the typical signs of ageing (things like sunken cheeks, hollow eyes, deep lines and wrinkles) as the body no longer has a means of keeping tissue strong and skin supple.

How does it work?

Fillers are made up of hyaluronic acid, which is a water-loving molecule that binds up to 400x its weight in water. It works like a sponge and fills up with water upon injection, filling out fine lines/wrinkles and plumping the treated area. Hyaluronic acid keeps young skin hydrated, but as we age, this volume of hyaluronic acid decreases and fine lines begin to appear that will eventually turn into wrinkles. In the lips, this causes thinning, and loss of fullness, volume and definition. Other factors can also cause lines to worsen, wrinkles to deepen and volume to be lost, such as sun exposure, lifestyle and muscle imbalances etc.

Filler Treatment Area

Filler treatments for lips typically involve the use of injectable dermal fillers to enhance the shape, volume, and definition of the lips. Commonly used fillers include hyaluronic acid-based products like Juvederm or Restylane. These fillers are injected into various areas of the lips to achieve desired results, such as plumping the lips, defining the lip borders, and reducing the appearance of fine lines.

This is beneficial to those who have concerns or complexes about the appearance and the shape of their jawline.

Some people can have a sagging jawline, which can be a sign of ageing or the after-effects of rapid weight loss. Others may genetically have a weak jawline which can affect confidence. A defined jawline is a very desirable look, and a strong jawline can look striking and also give a more youthful look. Dermal fillers can be used to stiffen and fill out loose skin on the jawline and define the jowl area, decreasing the weakness of an undesirable jawline. Dermal filler to the jaw can also give a facelift effect by improving the definition. Jawline filler isn’t for everyone and will not be successful if you carry excess weight in this area or simply have no jawline to work with. If you are unsure whether you are a good candidate for jawline filler, we advise you to have a free consultation prior to your main appointment. The amount of filler needed in this area shouldn’t be underestimated. Expect to need at least 2-4ml for even the most natural result (women) and 4-6ml (men).

When injected into the chin, fillers can lengthen a round face and achieve the perfect proportion. It can also move the chin forward to create the perfect ratio between the nose, lips and chin. Dermal fillers on the chin can also be used to fill wrinkles and folds, making the appearance of the chin more aesthetically pleasing. From the front, we can give the illusion of weight loss, contour and more definition. From the side, we can balance the profile (make the nose appear smaller, balance an overbite etc), give the illusion of a sharper jaw and thus slightly reduce the appearance of a double chin.

Do not underestimate the power of a chin. It is one of, if not the most effective procedure within the entire aesthetic industry.

Filler to the cheeks can be the solution to a lot of your worries. If injected correctly on to the bone, it can add support to the lower face and help with sagging on the jawline. Suddenly lost weight? Fat loss around the middle of your face can make you look tired and gaunt, cheek fillers can fill these areas nicely and naturally to give you back your youthful look. Your practitioner will tailor your treatment to suit YOU and different fillers and needs can be discussed at your appointment.

Tear trough filler is an instant and natural-looking correction to hollows under the eyes. Please note, that not everyone is suitable for this procedure. The ideal candidate should have sufficient skin thickness and no excess sagging as they will not be able to hold the product within the parameters.

Hollows can develop from an early age and can be caused by genetics, lack of sleep, stress, poor diet, and through the normal process as we age. It can help with dark circles but this is not guaranteed. 2 treatments are usually recommended, roughly 9-12 weeks apart.

As you get older, you may begin to notice lines and wrinkles around the mouth area. These can be in the form of lines or folds between the nose and mouth, called nasolabial folds.

There might also be lines from the edge of your mouth to your chin, which are called marionette lines. If you are a smoker, you may also have lines around your top lip. These lines and many others like it can be treated with non-surgical procedures using dermal filler.

Pre-dermal filler advice

  • Medicines to possibly discontinue 7 days before your dermal filler treatment. Please check with our doctor first if you are taking medicines for medical reasons. Some medicines make your blood thinner (less likely to clot) and cause bruising e.g. Excedrin, Ibuprofen, St John’s Wort, Omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamin E, Paracetamol, Ginseng and Alcohol.

Post-dermal filler advice

  • Some common injection-related reactions may occur, such as swelling, bruising,
redness, tenderness, itching and discolouration at the injection site. The intensity
and duration of your filler side effects will depend on individual healing characteristics, but can normally last for up to 1 week after treatment.
  • Sometimes swelling can make the lips appear uneven. If this happens please be
patient and as the swelling goes down the lips appear even again.
  • Try to avoid alcohol 24 hours after treatment as alcohol can cause bruising.
  • Avoid excessive sun or heat until any initial swelling and redness have subsided (avoid sunburn for 1 week).
  • Avoid squeezing and massaging the area for at least 24 hours as this could subtly
    change the results.
  • Do not take any Aspirin or Ibuprofen for 2 days after your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Take a look at some of the frequently asked questions below or get in touch with us to find out more.

A topical numbing cream will be applied for up to 10 minutes before your treatment to maximise comfort. Most dermal fillers used at the clinic contain Lidocaine (numbing agent) that will ease any discomfort. Try to arrive at your filler app 10 minutes early to allow sufficient numbing time. We also make sure we have cannulas available for all treatments. This technique is proven to cause less discomfort and less bruising. You are welcome to request a cannula if you prefer. We, however, do not use these for the lips.

It depends on what filler you opt for, some fillers last longer than others. Other factors that affect longevity are your metabolism, lifestyle, skin type etc. Please be patient as it may take frequent top-ups over the first year or so to get your desired result.
